Zombie Infestation Read online

When he fired again, he got the same results. Driving slowly, he ignored the collective screech from the rushing wave of zombies, but it was impossible to forget. Steel eyed, he ignored the zombies stuck in the exposed passenger window as he plowed over the gathered undead in front of the vehicle. At the outer border of the surging wave, he slammed the pedal to the floor.

The truck bounced when he drove over multiple zombies, dislodging the obese lady in a stained candy striped dress, and the boy with shoulder pads and football pants who clogged the side window. Despite the disturbing sound of the zombies who clung to the vehicle and banged on its sides, he continued down the main street.

As another hundred zombies flooded out of the adjacent alley like a swarm of bees, Ray raced past them. Heading North, he weaved through the debris and wreckage on the road, as he aimed at the set of barricades ahead of him, any zombies in his way got plowed over or mashed aside.

When he navigated around the first barricade, the seeing the sizable zombie horde rush toward him in the rear view mirror wasn’t comforting, but he was glad the massive population of zombies was behind him. For a moment, the noticeable squeaking of the side of the truck scraping by another vehicle offset the snarling of the sprinting horde that would never become winded.

Barely navigating the next barricade, he swung the wheel wide. Then he stomped the pedal and smashed through a long wooden construction barrier. Taking a sharp turn, he skidded around the corner and slammed on the brakes. The barrier in front of him was insurmountable. Fifty yards away was the broken bridge they had used to enter the city. The roar of the charging zombie wave behind him made his skin crawl, but he used that fear to sprint to the barricade.

There, he put a new clip into his side arm, and emptied it on the nearby stage one zombie invaders who appeared. When he looked back and saw the charging horde that filled the entire street, he gulped and used his bottled anxiety to climb the barricade like a bomb was about to drop behind him. Using what little stamina, and nerve he had left, he loaded a fresh clip as he sprint limped to the bridge.

  Chapter 35

When Ray arrived at the bridge, the first thing he looked for the grappling hook rope that Rose had stashed, which was exactly where she had left it. Behind him, the sound of snarling zombies attempting to climb the large barricade or the semi-truck on its side right next to it was distracting. The massive wave of zombies behind him made him sweat.

With a sense of urgency, he swung the rope like a veteran rodeo cowboy. Then snugged it on the other side. The increasing sound of the rushing wave of zombies behind him was like having an invisible spider sneaking up his spine that he couldn’t react to. When the grapple and rope was snug on both sides, he went hand over hand until he was safely on the other side of the destroyed bridge.

There, he laid on his back and caught his breath. He glanced over the at the heavy armored vehicle the Blackstone team had driven in. Then watched the front of the wave try to jump across the wide gap of the bridge. Rushing at full force, the howling zombies in the back pressed the ones in front of the bridge. They snarled as they tumbled down the cliffside. Then shouted out in rage when their bones broke as they bounced off the rock face, or landed on the sharp rocks below. As Ray stood up, he cringed at the horrible sound of howling zombies echoing through the canyon.

  “Nice job soldier.”

  Colonel Harrison’s voice surprised him.

Still trying to catch his breath Ray looked past him.

  “Did you get the cash?”

Ray pointed at the other side of the broken bridge.

“It’s in the truck behind that barricade.”

Harrison squinted, as he searched the horizon. When he saw the SWAT van tipped on its side behind the collapsed barricade he smiled. Above them, the thunder of spinning blades invaded as a half dozen small choppers mounted with two 50 caliber machine guns on each wing zipped past them. As the choppers hovered above the bridge, the wave of bullets and the chug of the giant machine guns made Harrison raise his voice to be heard.

“You even got rid of Winslow.”

  Ray had no response.

“I know you two served together, and were tight. Impressive.”

The humming sound of the chopper’s spinning heavy guns spraying blankets of bullets sounded like distorted feedback from a broken amplifier, and made Ray’s ears ring. Despite the choppers onslaught, zombies continued to climb over the broken barricade and the stacks of corpses just to be ripped to shreds. In the distance, the cracking of the tank blasts and the amazing barrage of destruction approaching the area sounded like an incoming dinosaur parade.

When zombies finally stopped climbing over the dam of corpses and shredded body parts, the chopper group sped away. The puddles of carnage left behind were barely offset by the transparent aluminum gray clouds of the morning sky. Exhausted, Ray exhaled as he closed his eyes. When he opened them again, Harrison held his hand out to help him up.

“Great job partner. I was nervous you wouldn’t be able to pull that off.”

  Ray was in a daze.

“As promised, I will release the evidence. No one will ever find out, and you won’t go back to prison. The money you made from this will probably allow you to easily get custody of your daughter, you will also have more than enough to just disappear.”

Ray just stared out at the horizon.

  Harrison shouted, “Wake up son.”

Harrison glanced back at the chopper parked on the road behind them.

“I will fly us across the bridge. After you hook the truck up to some tethers, we’re all done here.”

Harrison smirked as he backpedaled toward the chopper.

Reflecting, Ray stared out at burning skyline. I bet he tampered with their chopper, and used me to finish the job of eliminating his partners. This probably isn’t the first robbery. Ray just gazed at the clouds. I am the only witness, he isn’t paying me shit. Fuck, I’m screwed.
